[128] **"Bound to aging, they arranged sacrifices" (jaraṃ sitā yaññamakappayiṃsu):** "Bound to aging" means: dependent on aging (jarā), dependent on illness (byādhi), dependent on death (maraṇa), dependent on sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair (soka-parideva-dukkha-domanassa-upāyāsa). Because of dependence on birth (jāti) [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on birth, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on aging [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on aging, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on illness [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on illness, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on death [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on death, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on destination (gati) [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on destination, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on rebirth (upapatti) [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on rebirth, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on rebirth-linking, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on existence (bhava) [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on existence, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on saṃsāra [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on saṃsāra, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities; because of dependence on the round (vaṭṭa) [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities, or, being dependent on the round, [they arranged sacrifice] to the deities — being settled upon, adhered to, approached, held fast to, and intent upon [these]. Hence, "bound to aging, they arranged sacrifices."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"Whatever seers and humans here — (Puṇṇaka," said the Blessed One,) —
khattiyas and brāhmaṇas,
in great numbers here in the world, have arranged sacrifices (yañña) to the deities,
hoping, Puṇṇaka, for this state of being,
bound to aging they arranged sacrifices."
