[136] **"Those yoked to sacrifice, impassioned with lust for existence, have not crossed over birth and aging, I say."**
"Te" (they), in the passage "Te yājayogā bhavarāgarattā nātariṃsu jātijaran'ti brūmi": [this means] the offerers of sacrifices.
"Yājayogā" (yoked to sacrifice): they are engaged in sacrifices, devoted to them, thoroughly devoted to them; practicing that, abounding in that, giving weight to that, inclined toward that, leaning toward that, sloping toward that, intent upon that, having that as their dominant concern — thus "those yoked to sacrifice."
"Bhavarāgarattā" (impassioned with lust for existence): craving (taṇhā) is called lust for existence (bhavarāga) — that is, whatever desire for existence with regard to existences, lust for existence, delight in existence, craving for existence, affection for existence, thirst for existence, fever for existence, infatuation with existence, clinging to existence. Through lust for existence they are impassioned with regard to existences, tied, infatuated, engrossed, attached, fastened, impeded — thus "those yoked to sacrifice, impassioned with lust for existence."
"'They have not crossed over birth and aging,' I say": those yoked to sacrifice, impassioned with lust for existence, have not crossed, have not crossed over, have not crossed beyond, have not surmounted, have not passed beyond birth, aging, and death (jāti, jarā, maraṇa); not having departed from, not having escaped from, not having gone beyond, not having surmounted, not having passed beyond birth, aging, and death, they revolve within birth, aging, and death; they revolve within the path of the round of rebirths (saṃsāra) — followed by birth, pursued by aging, overcome by sickness, struck down by death; without protection, without shelter, without refuge, having nothing that could become a refuge — [this] I say, declare, teach, make known, establish, disclose, analyze, make plain, and proclaim. Thus: "Those yoked to sacrifice, impassioned with lust for existence, have not crossed over birth and aging, I say."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"They hope for, extol, (yearn for), and offer sacrifice (Puṇṇaka, said the Blessed One);
dependent on gain, they yearn for sensual pleasures.
Those yoked to sacrifice, impassioned with lust for existence,
have not crossed over birth and aging, I say."
