[138] **If they, devoted to sacrifice, did not cross over (te ce nātariṃsu yājayogā):** those performers of sacrifices, devoted to sacrifice, impassioned with lust for existence (bhavarāga), did not cross over birth, aging, death (jāti jarā maraṇa); they did not cross beyond it, did not cross past it, did not transcend it, did not pass beyond it. They have not departed from birth, aging, and death, have not escaped from it, have not gone beyond it, have not transcended it, have not passed beyond it; they revolve within birth, aging, and death; they revolve within the course of the round of rebirth (saṃsāra) — followed by birth, pervaded by aging, overwhelmed by sickness, struck down by death, without protection, without shelter, without refuge, having become refugeless. Therefore it is said: "If they, devoted to sacrifice, did not cross over."
**So said the venerable Puṇṇaka (iccāyasmā puṇṇako):** the word "icca" is a verbal connective … "the venerable Puṇṇaka."
