[215] **"The brahmin who owns nothing, faring on" (akiñcanaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ iriyamānaṃ):** **"Owning nothing" (akiñcanaṃ):** lust (rāga) is an impediment (kiñcana), hatred is an impediment, delusion is an impediment, conceit (māna) is an impediment, view (diṭṭhi) is an impediment, the defilements (kilesa) are an impediment, misconduct (duccarita) is an impediment. These impediments have been abandoned by the Buddha, the Blessed One — cut off at the root, made like a palm stump deprived of its base, obliterated, no longer subject to arising in the future. Therefore the Buddha is one who owns nothing. **"Brahmin" (brāhmaṇaṃ):** the Blessed One is a brahmin because he has banished (bāhita) seven things: personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi) has been banished; doubt (vicikicchā) has been banished; adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa) has been banished; lust has been banished; hatred has been banished; delusion has been banished; conceit has been banished. Banished for him are the evil, unwholesome states that defile, that lead to renewed existence, that bring distress, that ripen in suffering (dukkha), that lead to future birth, aging, and death. > Having banished all evils, (Sabhiya, said the Blessed One,) > the Blessed One, stainless, well concentrated, of steadfast self, > having passed beyond saṃsāra, is complete (kevalī); > independent, such a one (tādī) — he is called a brahmā.¹ **"Faring on" (iriyamānaṃ):** going, wandering, moving in the postures (iriyāpatha), proceeding, maintaining, keeping going, sustaining — hence "the brahmin who owns nothing, faring on."
