Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Cūḷaniddesa · Vol. 30 · Section 230

[230] **In the dhamma seen, not from hearsay (diṭṭhe dhamme anītihaṃ).** **In the dhamma seen (diṭṭhe dhamme):** in the dhamma that is seen, in the dhamma that is known, in the dhamma that is weighed, in the dhamma that is adjudged, in the dhamma that is clarified, in the dhamma that is made evident — [namely:] "All conditioned formations (saṅkhārā) are impermanent" … "Whatever is of a nature to originate, all that is of a nature to cease" — in the dhamma seen, in the dhamma known, in the dhamma weighed, in the dhamma adjudged, in the dhamma clarified, in the dhamma made evident: thus, too, [it is] "in the dhamma seen." Or else: "Having seen suffering (dukkha), I shall speak of suffering; having seen the origin, I shall speak of the origin; having seen the path, I shall speak of the path; having seen cessation, I shall speak of cessation": thus, too, [it is] "in the dhamma seen." Or else: in the dhamma seen — [a dhamma] to be seen for oneself, not delayed, inviting one to come and see, worthy of inducing in one's own mind, to be experienced individually by the wise: thus, too, [it is] "in the dhamma seen." Hence, "in the dhamma seen." **Not from hearsay (anītihaṃ):** "Not by report of 'thus it was said' (itiha), not by hearsay, not by lineage of teaching, not by scriptural collections, not on grounds of logic, not on grounds of inference, not by reasoned reflection, not by acceptance of a view after consideration — I shall speak of a dhamma personally, directly known by myself, evident to myself." Hence, "in the dhamma seen, not from hearsay."
