[236] **"He might cross over attachment (visattikā) in the world" (tare loke visattikaṃ):** "attachment" is a term for craving (taṇhā) — whatever lust, passion … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. **"Attachment":** in what sense is it attachment? … It is spread out, it is extended; therefore it is called "attachment." **"In the world":** in the world of the states of loss … in the world of the sense bases (āyatana). **"He might cross over attachment in the world":** whatever attachment there is in the world — being possessed of mindfulness, he might cross over¹, might cross above, might cross beyond, might transcend, might pass beyond that attachment in the world; therefore, "he might cross over attachment in the world." Hence that brahmin said:
"And that I delight in, O great seer —
the supreme peace,
knowing which, wandering mindful,
one might cross over attachment in the world."
