[335] **"Might cross over clinging (visattikā) in the world":** clinging (visattikā) is a term for craving (taṇhā) — that is, lust, passion … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. **"Clinging":** in what sense is it "clinging"? … it is spread out, it is extended: hence "clinging." **"In the world":** in the world of the states of loss (apāyaloka), in the human world, in the world of devas, in the world of the aggregates (khandha), in the world of the elements (dhātu), in the world of the sense bases (āyatana). **"Might cross over clinging in the world":** whatever clinging there is in the world — being mindful, one might cross, cross up over, cross beyond, transcend, and pass beyond that clinging in the world; hence, "might cross over clinging in the world." Therefore that brahmin said:
"And do you declare to me the Dhamma, O sage (muni) — the demolishing of craving —
which having understood, faring mindfully, one might cross over clinging in the world."
