[232] **He would cross over attachment (visattikā) in the world**: "attachment" (visattikā) is a term for craving (taṇhā) — that is, lust (rāga), passion (sārāga) … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. **Attachment**: in what sense is it "attachment"? … It is spread out, it is extensive; therefore it is called "attachment." **In the world**: in the world of the states of loss … in the world of the sense bases (āyatana). **He would cross over attachment in the world**: whatever attachment there is in the world — being mindful, one would cross, cross over, cross beyond, transcend, and pass beyond that attachment in the world; therefore, "he would cross over attachment in the world." Hence the Blessed One said:
"I shall proclaim peace to you," (said the Blessed One to Dhotaka,)
"visible in this very life, not a matter of hearsay,
having understood which, faring mindful,
one would cross over attachment in the world."
