[280] **All pathways of speech, too, have been uprooted** (samūhatā vādapathāpi sabbe): defilements, aggregates (khandha), and volitional formations (abhisaṅkhāra) are called pathways of speech (vādapatha). For him, assertions and pathways of assertion, designations (adhivacana) and pathways of designation, linguistic expressions (nirutti) and pathways of expression, concepts (paññatti) and pathways of concepts have been removed, fully removed, drawn out, fully drawn out, pulled up, fully pulled up, abandoned, cut off, calmed, tranquillized, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa). Thus: "All pathways of speech, too, have been uprooted."
Therefore the Blessed One said:
"For one who has gone out there is no measure" (said the Blessed One, "Upasīva");
"that by which they might speak of him — that, for him, does not exist.
When all dhammas have been uprooted,
all pathways of speech, too, are uprooted."
Together with the conclusion of the verse … "The Blessed One, venerable sir, is my Teacher; I am a disciple."
