[290] (Thus the venerable Nanda:) "Whatever ascetics and brahmins there are who declare purity by what is seen and heard, who declare purity by rules and observances (sīlabbata), who declare purity in manifold ways — (O Blessed One,) have they, restrained as they conduct themselves therein, crossed over birth and aging, dear sir (mārisa)? I ask you, Blessed One; declare this to me."
