Nandamāṇavakapañhāniddesa

Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Cūḷaniddesa · Vol. 30 · Section 291

[291] **"Whatever ascetics and brahmins here"** (*yekecime samaṇabrāhmaṇā se*): **"Whatever"** (*yekeci*) means all entirely, all in every way, without remainder, without exception; this word "yekeci" is a term of total inclusion. **"Ascetics"** (*samaṇā*): whosoever, outside of this [Dispensation], have gone forth into the going-forth (pabbajjā), have attained to the state of wanderers (paribbājaka). **"Brahmins"** (*brāhmaṇā*): whosoever are addressers of others as "bho" (*bhovādikā*). Hence: "whatever ascetics and brahmins here." **"So the venerable Nanda [said]"** (*iccāyasmā Nando*): **"Icca"** is a verbal junction (padasandhi). **"Āyasmā"** (venerable) is a term of endearment. **"Nando"** is that brahmin's name … a term of address. Hence: "so the venerable Nanda [said]."
