[306] **"Whatever ascetics and brahmins there are"** (ye keci me samaṇabrāhmaṇā se): "Whatever" (ye keci) means all in every respect, all in every way, without remainder, entirely without remainder; this word "ye keci" is an expression of total inclusion. **"Ascetics"** (samaṇā): whosoever, outside of this [Dispensation], have entered upon the going forth (pabbajjā), have attained the state of wanderers (paribbājaka). **"Brahmins"** (brāhmaṇā): whosoever address others as "bho" (bhovādikā). Hence, "whatever ascetics and brahmins there are."
**"So said the venerable Nanda"** (iccāyasmā Nando): The word "icca" is a junction of words (padasandhi). "Āyasmā" (venerable) is a term of affection. "Nanda" is that brahmin's name … an appellation (abhilāpa). Hence, "so said the venerable Nanda."
