[298] ("Nanda," said the Blessed One,) "Whatever ascetics and brahmins there are who declare purity by what is seen and by what is heard, who declare purity by rules and observances (sīlabbata), who declare purity in manifold ways — though they conduct themselves restrained therein, they have not crossed over birth and aging, I say."
