[314] **"I do not say that all ascetics and brahmins (Nanda," said the Blessed One,) "are shrouded by birth (jāti) and aging (jarā)"**: Nanda, I do not say that all ascetics and brahmins are entangled, shrouded, veiled,² shut in, concealed, and covered over by birth and aging. There are those ascetics and brahmins for whom birth, aging, and death (maraṇa) have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, brought to non-existence, of a nature not to arise again in the future — this I say, declare, teach, make known, establish, disclose, analyze, and make plain. Thus: "I do not say that all ascetics and brahmins (Nanda," said the Blessed One,) "are shrouded by birth and aging."
