[357] As to the phrase, **"Is he without hope, or is he one who hopes?"** — is he without craving (taṇhā), or is he one with craving? Does he hope for form, for sounds, odours, tastes, tangibles, for family, company, dwelling, gain, fame, praise, pleasure, for robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick; for the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu), the form element (rūpadhātu), the formless element (arūpadhātu); for sense-sphere existence (kāmabhava), form existence, formless existence; for percipient existence, non-percipient existence, neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient existence; for one-constituent existence, four-constituent existence, five-constituent existence; for the past, the future, the present — does he hope for, wish for, take delight in, aspire to, long for, and hanker after dhammas seen, heard, sensed, and to be cognized? Hence, "Is he without hope, or is he one who hopes."
