[593] **All that promotes speculation (takkavaḍḍhana)**: all that promotes speculation, promotes thought (vitakka), promotes intention (saṅkappa); promotes thought of sensual pleasures (kāmavitakka), promotes thought of ill will and thought of harming (byāpāda-vihiṃsā-vitakka); promotes thought concerning relatives, promotes thought concerning one's country, promotes thought concerning immortality (amaravitakka); promotes thought connected with sympathy for others, promotes thought connected with gain, honor, and fame, promotes thought connected with the wish not to be despised — thus, all that promotes speculation. Therefore the Elder Piṅgiya said:
Those who in the past explained to me (apart from Gotama's teaching),
saying, "So it was, so it shall be" —
all that is hearsay;
all that promotes speculation.
