[77] "Mindfulness is that which bars them" (sati tesaṃ nivāraṇaṃ): "Mindfulness (sati)" — that mindfulness which is recollection (anussati), remembrance (paṭissati), mindfulness; the state of remembering (saraṇatā), the state of retaining (dhāraṇatā), the state of not floating away (apilāpanatā), the state of non-forgetfulness (asammussanatā); mindfulness, the mindfulness faculty (satindriya), mindfulness as a factor of awakening (bojjhaṅga) (satisambojjhaṅga), the one-way path (ekāyanamagga) — this is called mindfulness. "That which bars" (nivāraṇaṃ): it is an obstruction, a barrier, a restraint, a guarding, a protecting — thus "mindfulness is that which bars them."
