[793] **With a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent** (alīnacitto akusītavutti): That Paccekasambuddha generates zeal (chanda), strives, arouses energy, exerts the mind (citta), and endeavors for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen; he generates zeal, strives, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and endeavors for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have arisen; he generates zeal, strives, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and endeavors for the arising of wholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen; he generates zeal, strives, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and endeavors for the maintenance, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome dhammas that have arisen. Thus he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent.
Or else, he exerts the mind and endeavors thus: "Willingly, let skin and sinews and bones dry up, and flesh and blood; so long as that which can be attained by human strength, by human power, by human energy, by human exertion has not been attained, there shall be no standing still of energy." Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent. He exerts the mind and endeavors thus: "I shall not break this cross-legged posture until my mind is liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging." Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent.
He exerts the mind and endeavors thus:
"I shall not eat, I shall not drink,
nor shall I go out from the dwelling,
nor shall I lie down upon my side,
while the dart of craving (taṇhā) is not drawn out."
Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent. He exerts the mind and endeavors thus: "I shall not rise from this seat until my mind is liberated from the taints through non-clinging." Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent. He exerts the mind and endeavors thus: "I shall not step down from this walking-path, I shall not go out from the dwelling, I shall not go out from the half-gabled house, I shall not go out from the mansion, I shall not go out from the flat-roofed house, I shall not go out from the cave, I shall not go out from the grotto, I shall not go out from the hut, I shall not go out from the peaked house, I shall not go out from the watchtower, I shall not go out from the hall, I shall not go out from the shelter, I shall not go out from the attendance hall, I shall not go out from the pavilion, I shall not go out from the foot of the tree, until my mind is liberated from the taints through non-clinging." Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent. He exerts the mind and endeavors thus: "In this very morning I shall bring forth the noble Dhamma, I shall gather it in, I shall attain it, I shall touch it, I shall realize it." Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent. He exerts the mind and endeavors thus: "In this very midday, in this very evening, before the meal, after the meal, in the first watch, in the middle watch, in the last watch, in the dark fortnight, in the bright fortnight, in the rainy season, in the winter, in the summer, in the first stage of life, in the middle stage of life, in the last stage of life, I shall bring forth the noble Dhamma, I shall gather it in, I shall attain it, I shall touch it, I shall realize it." Thus too he is one with a mind not sluggish, of conduct not indolent.
