[169] What is the conduct of knowledge (ñāṇacariyā)? The indeterminate (abyākata) functional (kiriyā) act of adverting (āvajjana) for the purpose of the contemplation of impermanence (aniccānupassanā) is conduct of consciousness (viññāṇacariyā); the contemplation of impermanence is conduct of knowledge. The indeterminate functional act of adverting for the purpose of the contemplation of suffering (dukkha) is conduct of consciousness; the contemplation of suffering is conduct of knowledge. The indeterminate functional act of adverting for the purpose of the contemplation of not-self is conduct of consciousness; the contemplation of not-self is conduct of knowledge. For the purpose of the contemplation of disenchantment … for the purpose of the contemplation of dispassion, for the purpose of the contemplation of cessation (nirodha), for the purpose of the contemplation of relinquishment, for the purpose of the contemplation of destruction, for the purpose of the contemplation of fall, for the purpose of the contemplation of change, for the purpose of the contemplation of the signless, for the purpose of the contemplation of the desireless, for the purpose of the contemplation of emptiness, for the purpose of the contemplation of dhammas with higher wisdom, for the purpose of knowledge and vision as it really is (yathābhūta), for the purpose of the contemplation of danger, for the purpose of the contemplation of reflection — the indeterminate functional act of adverting is conduct of consciousness; the contemplation of reflection (paṭisaṅkhānupassanā) is conduct of knowledge; the contemplation of turning away (vivaṭṭanānupassanā) is conduct of knowledge. The path of stream-entry (sotāpattimagga) is conduct of knowledge; the attainment of the fruition of stream-entry is conduct of knowledge; the path of once-returning is conduct of knowledge; the attainment of the fruition of once-returning is conduct of knowledge; the path of non-returning is conduct of knowledge; the attainment of the fruition of non-returning is conduct of knowledge; the path of Arahantship is conduct of knowledge; the attainment of the fruition of Arahantship is conduct of knowledge.
