[195] The meaning of establishing (upaṭṭhāna) is a meaning; the meaning of investigation (pavicaya) is a meaning; the meaning of exertion (paggaha) is a meaning; the meaning of pervasion (pharaṇa) is a meaning; the meaning of calm (upasama) is a meaning; the meaning of non-distraction (avikkhepa) is a meaning; the meaning of reflection (paṭisaṅkhāna) is a meaning. The meaning of establishing is one meaning; the meaning of investigation is another meaning; the meaning of exertion is another meaning; the meaning of pervasion is another meaning; the meaning of calm is another meaning; the meaning of non-distraction is another meaning; the meaning of reflection is another meaning. By whatever knowledge (ñāṇa) these different meanings are known, by that very knowledge these different meanings are penetrated. Therefore it is said: understanding of the diversity of meanings is knowledge of the discrimination of meanings (attha-paṭisambhidā).
