[231] "Calm" (samaṃ): Because sensual desire has been abandoned, renunciation (nekkhamma) is calm. Because ill will has been abandoned, non-ill will is calm. Because dullness and drowsiness have been abandoned, the perception of light (ālokasaññā) is calm. Because restlessness has been abandoned, non-distraction is calm. Because doubt has been abandoned, the defining of dhammas is calm. Because ignorance has been abandoned, knowledge (ñāṇa) is calm. Because discontent has been abandoned, gladness is calm. Because the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) have been abandoned, the first jhāna is calm. … Because all defilements have been abandoned, the path of arahantship is calm.
