[236] "Effacement (sallekha)": sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is non-effacement; renunciation (nekkhamma) is effacement. Ill will (byāpāda) is non-effacement; non-ill will (abyāpāda) is effacement. Dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) are non-effacement; the perception of light (ālokasaññā) is effacement. Restlessness (uddhacca) is non-effacement; non-distraction (avikkhepa) is effacement. Doubt (vicikicchā) is non-effacement; the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna) is effacement. Ignorance (avijjā) is non-effacement; knowledge (ñāṇa) is effacement. Discontent (arati) is non-effacement; gladness (pāmujja) is effacement. The hindrances (nīvaraṇa) are non-effacement; the first jhāna is effacement … all defilements (kilesa) are non-effacement; the path of arahantship (arahattamagga) is effacement.
That is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of its being known, and wisdom (paññā) in the sense of understanding. Therefore it is said: wisdom in the exhausting of [defilements that are] thick, diverse, and of fiery power (puthunānattatejapariyādāna) is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of effacement.
