[363] What are the eight knowledges (ñāṇa) concerning obstacles and the eight knowledges concerning aids?
Sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is an obstacle to concentration (samādhi); renunciation is an aid to concentration. Ill will (byāpāda) is an obstacle to concentration; non-ill will is an aid to concentration. Dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) are an obstacle to concentration; perception of light is an aid to concentration. Restlessness (uddhacca) is an obstacle to concentration; non-distraction is an aid to concentration. Doubt (vicikicchā) is an obstacle to concentration; definition of dhammas is an aid to concentration. Ignorance (avijjā) is an obstacle to concentration; knowledge is an aid to concentration. Discontent is an obstacle to concentration; gladness is an aid to concentration. All unwholesome states whatsoever are an obstacle to concentration; all wholesome states whatsoever are an aid to concentration. These are the eight knowledges concerning obstacles and the eight knowledges concerning aids.
In these sixteen ways the mind that has been exerted and thoroughly exerted becomes settled in oneness and is purified of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa).
