[427] In how many ways are the five faculties (pañcindriyāni) developed? In how many ways are the five faculties both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized?
The five faculties are developed in four ways; in four ways the five faculties are both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized. At the moment of the Path of Stream-Entry (sotāpattimagga) the five faculties are developed; at the moment of the Fruition of Stream-Entry (sotāpattiphala) the five faculties are both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized. At the moment of the Path of Once-Returning (sakadāgāmimagga) the five faculties are developed; at the moment of the Fruition of Once-Returning (sakadāgāmiphala) the five faculties are both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized. At the moment of the Path of Non-Returning (anāgāmimagga) the five faculties are developed; at the moment of the Fruition of Non-Returning (anāgāmiphala) the five faculties are both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized. At the moment of the Path of Arahantship (arahattamagga) the five faculties are developed; at the moment of the Fruition of Arahantship (arahattaphala) the five faculties are both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized.
Thus there are four purities of the path (maggavisuddhi), four purities of fruition (phalavisuddhi), four purities of cutting off (samucchedavisuddhi), and four purities of tranquilization (paṭippassaddhivisuddhi). In these four ways the five faculties are developed; in these four ways the five faculties are both developed and well developed, tranquilized and well tranquilized.
