[428] For how many persons is there development of the faculties (indriyabhāvanā)? How many persons are those whose faculties are developed (bhāvitindriya)? For eight persons there is development of the faculties; three persons are those whose faculties are developed.
For which eight persons is there development of the faculties? For the seven trainers (sekkha) and for the virtuous ordinary person (puthujjanakalyāṇaka) — for these eight persons there is development of the faculties. Which are the three persons? The disciple of the Tathāgata whose taints (āsava) are destroyed is "buddha" by way of having developed the faculties — one whose faculties are developed; the Paccekabuddha [is "buddha"] in the sense of being self-become (sayambhū) — one whose faculties are developed; the Tathāgata, the Accomplished One, the Fully Self-Enlightened One (arahaṃ sammāsambuddho) [is "buddha"] in the sense of being immeasurable — one whose faculties are developed. These three persons are those whose faculties are developed. Thus for these eight persons there is development of the faculties; these three persons are those whose faculties are developed.
