[429] Bhikkhus, there are these five faculties (indriya). What five? The faith faculty (saddhindriya), the energy faculty (viriyindriya), the mindfulness faculty (satindriya), the concentration faculty (samādhindriya), and the wisdom faculty (paññindriya). Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins do not understand as it really is the origin, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of these five faculties: these, bhikkhus, I do not consider ascetics among ascetics or brahmins among brahmins; nor do those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves by direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism or the goal of brahminhood.
But, bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins understand as it really is the origin, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of these five faculties: these, bhikkhus, I do consider ascetics among ascetics and brahmins among brahmins; and those venerable ones, having realized it for themselves by direct knowledge, in this very life enter upon and dwell in the goal of asceticism and the goal of brahminhood.
