[439] By way of the energy faculty (viriyindriya) in the four right exertions (sammappadhāna), by which twenty modes should the five faculties (indriya) be seen?
In the right exertion for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen, the energy faculty should be seen in the sense of dominance in exertion (paggahādhipateyya); by way of the energy faculty, the mindfulness faculty (satindriya) should be seen in the sense of establishing (upaṭṭhāna); the concentration faculty (samādhindriya) should be seen in the sense of non-distraction; the wisdom faculty (paññindriya) should be seen in the sense of seeing; the faith faculty (saddhindriya) should be seen in the sense of resolution (adhimokkha). In the right exertion for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome dhammas that have arisen … In the right exertion for the arising of wholesome dhammas that have not yet arisen … In the right exertion for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome dhammas that have arisen, the energy faculty should be seen in the sense of dominance in exertion; by way of the energy faculty, the mindfulness faculty should be seen in the sense of establishing; the concentration faculty should be seen in the sense of non-distraction; the wisdom faculty should be seen in the sense of seeing; the faith faculty should be seen in the sense of resolution. By way of the energy faculty in the four right exertions, it is by these twenty modes that the five faculties should be seen.
