[445] By way of the energy faculty (viriyindriya) in the four right strivings (sammappadhāna), in which twenty modes should the conduct (cariyā) of the five faculties (indriya) be seen?
In the right striving for the non-arising of unarisen evil, unwholesome states, the conduct of the energy faculty should be seen in the sense of dominance in exertion (paggahādhipateyya); by way of the energy faculty, the conduct of the mindfulness faculty (satindriya) should be seen in the sense of establishment (upaṭṭhāna) … the conduct of the faith faculty (saddhindriya) should be seen in the sense of resolution (adhimokkha). In the right striving for the abandoning of arisen evil, unwholesome states … In the right striving for the arising of unarisen wholesome states … In the right striving for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of arisen wholesome states, the conduct of the energy faculty should be seen in the sense of dominance in exertion; by way of the energy faculty, [the conduct] of the mindfulness faculty in the sense of establishment … the conduct of the faith faculty should be seen in the sense of resolution. By way of the energy faculty in the four right strivings, the conduct of the five faculties should be seen in these twenty modes.
