[511] There is liberation (vimokkha), there is an entrance (mukha), there is an entrance to liberation; there is what is contrary to liberation, there is what conforms with liberation, there is turning away (vivaṭṭa) through liberation; there is the development (bhāvanā) of liberation, there is the tranquilization (paṭippassaddhi) of liberation.
What is liberation? The emptiness liberation (suññata vimokkha), the signless liberation (animitta vimokkha), the desireless liberation (appaṇihita vimokkha).
What is the emptiness liberation? The knowledge (ñāṇa) of the contemplation of impermanence is released from adherence (abhinivesa) [to things] as permanent: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of suffering (dukkha) is released from adherence [to things] as pleasant: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of not-self is released from adherence [to things] as self: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of disenchantment (nibbidā) is released from adherence to delight: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of dispassion (virāga) is released from adherence to lust: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of cessation (nirodha) is released from adherence [to things] as origin: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of relinquishment (paṭinissagga) is released from adherence to grasping: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of the signless is released from adherence to signs: thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of the desireless is released from adherence to wishing (paṇidhi): thus it is the emptiness liberation. The knowledge of the contemplation of emptiness is released from all adherences: thus it is the emptiness liberation.
The knowledge of the contemplation of impermanence in form is released from adherence [to it] as permanent: thus it is the emptiness liberation … the knowledge of the contemplation of emptiness in form is released from all adherences: thus it is the emptiness liberation. In feeling (vedanā), in perception, in volitional formations, in consciousness, in the eye … in aging and death, the knowledge of the contemplation of impermanence is released from adherence [to them] as permanent: thus it is the emptiness liberation … the knowledge of the contemplation of emptiness in aging and death is released from all adherences: thus it is the emptiness liberation. This is the emptiness liberation.
