[514] What is the gateway (mukha)? Those blameless, wholesome dhammas partaking of awakening (bodhipakkhiyā dhammā) that have arisen therein — this is the gateway.
What is the gateway to liberation (vimokkhamukha)? That which is the object of those various dhammas — cessation, Nibbāna — this is the gateway to liberation.
What is opposed to liberation (vimokkhapaccanīka)? The three unwholesome roots (akusalamūla) are opposed to liberation; the three kinds of misconduct (duccarita) are opposed to liberation; indeed, all unwholesome dhammas are opposed to liberation. This is what is opposed to liberation.
What is in conformity with liberation (vimokkhānuloma)? The three wholesome roots (kusalamūla) are in conformity with liberation; the three kinds of good conduct (sucarita) are in conformity with liberation; indeed, all wholesome dhammas are in conformity with liberation. This is what is in conformity with liberation.
