[557] Bhikkhus, there are these seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga). What seven? The awakening factor of mindfulness (sati), the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), the awakening factor of energy (vīriya), the awakening factor of rapture (pīti), the awakening factor of tranquility (passaddhi), the awakening factor of concentration (samādhi), the awakening factor of equanimity (upekkhā). These, bhikkhus, are the seven factors of awakening.
"Factors of awakening": in what sense are they factors of awakening?
They lead on to awakening (bodhi), thus they are factors of awakening; they awaken, thus they are factors of awakening; they awaken in conformity, thus they are factors of awakening; they awaken discerningly, thus they are factors of awakening; they awaken fully, thus they are factors of awakening. In the sense of awakening they are factors of awakening; in the sense of awakening in conformity they are factors of awakening; in the sense of awakening discerningly they are factors of awakening; in the sense of awakening fully they are factors of awakening. They cause awakening, thus they are factors of awakening; they cause awakening in conformity, thus they are factors of awakening; they cause awakening discerningly, thus they are factors of awakening; they cause full awakening, thus they are factors of awakening. In the sense of causing awakening they are factors of awakening; in the sense of causing awakening in conformity they are factors of awakening; in the sense of causing awakening discerningly they are factors of awakening; in the sense of causing full awakening they are factors of awakening. In the sense of partaking of awakening they are factors of awakening; in the sense of partaking of awakening in conformity they are factors of awakening; in the sense of partaking of awakening discerningly they are factors of awakening; in the sense of partaking of full awakening they are factors of awakening. In the sense of the obtaining of awakened understanding (buddhi) they are factors of awakening; in the sense of the planting of awakened understanding they are factors of awakening; in the sense of the further cultivation of awakened understanding they are factors of awakening; in the sense of bringing one to awakened understanding they are factors of awakening; in the sense of bringing one fully to awakened understanding they are factors of awakening.
