[622] What is the power of faith (saddhābala)? In that it is unshaken by faithlessness (assaddhiya), it is the power of faith; in the sense of supporting its conascent dhammas, it is the power of faith;¹ in the sense of exhausting the defilements (kilesa), it is the power of faith; in the sense of purifying the beginning of penetration, it is the power of faith; in the sense of steadying the mind (citta), it is the power of faith; in the sense of cleansing the mind, it is the power of faith; in the sense of attaining distinction, it is the power of faith; in the sense of penetrating further, it is the power of faith; in the sense of realization of truth, it is the power of faith; in the sense of establishing [one] in cessation (nirodha), it is the power of faith. This is the power of faith.
What is the power of energy (vīriyabala)? In that it is unshaken by indolence (kosajja), it is the power of energy; in the sense of supporting its conascent dhammas, it is the power of energy; in the sense of exhausting the defilements, it is the power of energy; in the sense of purifying the beginning of penetration, it is the power of energy; in the sense of steadying the mind, it is the power of energy; in the sense of cleansing the mind, it is the power of energy; in the sense of attaining distinction, it is the power of energy; in the sense of penetrating further, it is the power of energy; in the sense of realization of truth, it is the power of energy; in the sense of establishing [one] in cessation, it is the power of energy. This is the power of energy.
What is the power of mindfulness (satibala)? In that it is unshaken by heedlessness (pamāda), it is the power of mindfulness; in the sense of supporting its conascent dhammas, it is the power of mindfulness; … in the sense of establishing [one] in cessation, it is the power of mindfulness. This is the power of mindfulness.
What is the power of concentration (samādhibala)? In that it is unshaken by restlessness (uddhacca), it is the power of concentration (samādhi); in the sense of supporting its conascent dhammas, it is the power of concentration; … in the sense of establishing [one] in cessation, it is the power of concentration. This is the power of concentration.
What is the power of wisdom (paññābala)? In that it is unshaken by ignorance (avijjā), it is the power of wisdom; in the sense of supporting its conascent dhammas, it is the power of wisdom; … in the sense of establishing [one] in cessation, it is the power of wisdom. This is the power of wisdom.
