[623] What is the power of conscience (hiribala)? Through renunciation (nekkhamma) one is ashamed of sensual desire (kāmacchanda): thus it is the power of conscience. Through non-ill will (abyāpāda) one is ashamed of ill will (byāpāda): thus it is the power of conscience. Through the perception of light (ālokasaññā) one is ashamed of dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha): thus it is the power of conscience. Through non-distraction (avikkhepa) one is ashamed of restlessness (uddhacca): thus it is the power of conscience. Through the defining of dhammas (dhammavavatthāna) one is ashamed of doubt (vicikicchā): thus it is the power of conscience. Through knowledge (ñāṇa) one is ashamed of ignorance (avijjā): thus it is the power of conscience. Through gladness (pāmojja) one is ashamed of discontent (arati): thus it is the power of conscience.
