[627] What is the power of insight (vipassanābala)?
Contemplation of impermanence (aniccānupassanā) is a power of insight; contemplation of suffering (dukkhānupassanā) is a power of insight … contemplation of relinquishment (paṭinissaggānupassanā) is a power of insight. Contemplation of impermanence in form is a power of insight; contemplation of suffering in form is a power of insight … contemplation of relinquishment in form is a power of insight. Contemplation of impermanence in feeling (vedanā), in perception, in volitional formations, in consciousness, in the eye … in aging and death is a power of insight; contemplation of suffering in aging and death is a power of insight; contemplation of relinquishment in aging and death is a power of insight.
"The power of insight": in what sense is it the power of insight? In that, through contemplation of impermanence, one does not waver in regard to the perception of permanence — it is the power of insight. In that, through contemplation of suffering, one does not waver in regard to the perception of happiness — it is the power of insight. In that, through contemplation of non-self (anattānupassanā), one does not waver in regard to the perception of self — it is the power of insight. In that, through contemplation of disenchantment (nibbidānupassanā), one does not waver in regard to delight — it is the power of insight. In that, through contemplation of dispassion (virāgānupassanā), one does not waver in regard to lust (rāga) — it is the power of insight. In that, through contemplation of cessation (nirodhānupassanā), one does not waver in regard to origin — it is the power of insight. In that, through contemplation of relinquishment, one does not waver in regard to grasping (ādāna) — it is the power of insight. In that one does not waver, does not shake, does not tremble in regard to ignorance, the defilements accompanied by ignorance, and the aggregates — it is the power of insight. This is the power of insight.
