[63] For one striving for the attainment of the path (magga) of stream-entry, the path of stream-entry is attained; thus that dhamma is both fully understood (pariññāta) and scrutinized (tīrita). For one striving for the attainment of the path of once-returning, the path of once-returning is attained; thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. For one striving for the attainment of the path of non-returning, the path of non-returning is attained; thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. For one striving for the attainment of the path of arahantship, the path of arahantship is attained; thus that dhamma is both fully understood and scrutinized. Whatever dhammas one strives to attain, those very dhammas are attained; thus those dhammas are both fully understood and scrutinized. That is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of what is known; wisdom (paññā) in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: the wisdom of attentive listening (sotāvadhāna) that understands, "These dhammas are to be fully understood," is knowledge born of what is heard (sutamaye ñāṇaṃ).
