[654] What is emptiness through unity, emptiness through diversity (ekattasuññaṃ nānattasuññaṃ)? Sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is diversity; renunciation (nekkhamma) is unity. For one intending the unity of renunciation, [it] is empty of sensual desire. Ill will (byāpāda) is diversity; non-ill will is unity. For one intending the unity of non-ill will, [it] is empty of ill will. Dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) are diversity; the perception of light (ālokasaññā) is unity. For one intending the unity of the perception of light, [it] is empty of dullness and drowsiness. Restlessness (uddhacca) is diversity; doubt (vicikicchā) is diversity; ignorance (avijjā) is diversity; discontent (arati) is diversity; the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) are diversity; the first jhāna is unity. For one intending the unity of the first jhāna, [it] is empty of the hindrances. … All defilements (kilesa) are diversity; the path of arahantship (arahattamagga) is unity. For one intending the unity of the path of arahantship, [it] is empty of all defilements. This is emptiness through unity, emptiness through diversity.
