[68] There are two kinds of development (bhāvanā): mundane (lokiya) development and supramundane (lokuttara) development.
There are three kinds of development: the development of wholesome dhammas pertaining to the form sphere (rūpāvacara), the development of wholesome dhammas pertaining to the formless sphere (arūpāvacara), and the development of unincluded (apariyāpanna) wholesome dhammas. The development of wholesome dhammas pertaining to the form sphere may be inferior, middling, or superior; the development of wholesome dhammas pertaining to the formless sphere may be inferior, middling, or superior; the development of unincluded wholesome dhammas is superior.
There are four kinds of development: one develops while penetrating the truth of suffering (dukkha), a penetration by full understanding (pariññā); one develops while penetrating the truth of origin, a penetration by abandonment (pahāna); one develops while penetrating the truth of cessation, a penetration by realization (sacchikiriyā); one develops while penetrating the truth of the path, a penetration by development. These are the four kinds of development.
