[687] What is mind-made power (manomayā iddhi)?
Here a bhikkhu creates from this body another body — possessed of form, mind-made, complete in all its limbs and parts, not deficient in any faculty (indriya). Just as a man might draw out a reed from muñja grass, and he would know: "This is the muñja grass, this is the reed; the muñja grass is one thing, the reed is another; but it is from the muñja grass that the reed has been drawn out" — or just as a man might draw a sword from its scabbard, and he would know: "This is the sword, this is the scabbard; the sword is one thing, the scabbard is another; but it is from the scabbard that the sword has been drawn" — or just as a man might pull a snake out from its slough, and he would know: "This is the snake, this is the slough; the snake is one thing, the slough is another; but it is from the slough that the snake has been pulled out" — even so a bhikkhu creates from this body another body — possessed of form, mind-made, complete in all its limbs and parts, not deficient in any faculty. This is mind-made power.
