[709] Of right concentration, what are the five kinds of fading away (virāga)? Fading away by suppression (vikkhambhanavirāga), fading away by the opposite factor (tadaṅgavirāga), fading away by cutting off (samucchedavirāga), fading away by tranquilization (paṭippassaddhivirāga), and fading away by escape (nissaraṇavirāga). Fading away by suppression of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) is for one developing the first jhāna; fading away by the opposite factor with respect to views is for one developing concentration (samādhi) partaking of penetration; fading away by cutting off is for one developing the supramundane path leading to destruction; fading away by tranquilization is at the moment of fruition; and fading away by escape is cessation, Nibbāna. These are the five kinds of fading away of right concentration. With regard to these five kinds of fading away, zeal is born, one is resolved through faith, and one's mind (citta) is well established.
