[710] Of right concentration, what are the five cessations (nirodha)? Cessation by suppression (vikkhambhananirodha), cessation by substitution of opposites (tadaṅganirodha), cessation by cutting off (samucchedanirodha), cessation by tranquilization (paṭippassaddhinirodha), and cessation by escape (nissaraṇanirodha). Cessation by suppression of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) is for one developing the first jhāna; cessation by substitution of opposites of wrong views is for one developing concentration (samādhi) partaking of penetration; cessation by cutting off is for one developing the supramundane path leading to destruction; cessation by tranquilization is at the moment of fruition; cessation by escape is the deathless element (dhātu). These are the five cessations of right concentration. One comes to have zeal for these five cessations, is resolved through faith, and one's mind (citta) is well established.
