[711] What are the five relinquishments (vossagga) of right concentration? Relinquishment by suppression (vikkhambhana-vossagga), relinquishment by the substitution of opposite factors (tadaṅga-vossagga), relinquishment by cutting off (samuccheda-vossagga), relinquishment by tranquilization (paṭippassaddhi-vossagga), and relinquishment by escape (nissaraṇa-vossagga). Relinquishment by suppression of the hindrances (nīvaraṇa) is for one developing the first jhāna; relinquishment by the substitution of opposite factors, of the views, is for one developing concentration (samādhi) partaking of penetration; relinquishment by cutting off is for one developing the supramundane path leading to destruction; relinquishment by tranquilization is at the moment of fruition; and relinquishment by escape is cessation, Nibbāna. These are the five relinquishments of right concentration. Regarding these five relinquishments one comes to have zeal, is resolved through faith, and one's mind (citta) is well established.
Right concentration has these five seclusions, five fadings away (virāga), five cessations, five relinquishments, and twelve supports (nissaya).
