[712] Bhikkhus, just as whatever works requiring strength are done, all of them are done in dependence on the earth, established upon the earth — thus are these works requiring strength done — even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, in dependence on virtue (sīla), established in virtue, develops the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), cultivates the seven factors of awakening … developing the seven factors of awakening, cultivating the seven factors of awakening, he attains growth, increase, and abundance in dhammas … he develops the five powers (bala), cultivates the five powers … developing the five powers, cultivating the five powers, he attains growth, increase, and abundance in dhammas … he develops the five faculties (indriya), cultivates the five faculties … .
Bhikkhus, just as whatever seed-life and plant-life (bījagāma-bhūtagāma) come to growth, increase, and abundance, all of them come to growth, increase, and abundance in dependence on the earth, established upon the earth — thus do these seeds and plants come to growth, increase, and abundance — even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, in dependence on virtue, established in virtue, developing the five faculties, cultivating the five faculties, attains growth, increase, and abundance in dhammas.
