[702] "And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, relying on virtue (sīla), established in virtue, develop the Noble Eightfold Path (ariya aṭṭhaṅgika magga) and cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path?
Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops Right View (sammādiṭṭhi), which is based on seclusion (viveka), based on dispassion (virāga), based on cessation, maturing in relinquishment (vossagga); he develops Right Thought (sammāsaṅkappa); he develops Right Speech (sammāvācā); he develops Right Action (sammākammanta); he develops Right Livelihood (sammā-ājīva); he develops Right Effort (sammāvāyāma); he develops Right Mindfulness (sammāsati); he develops Right Concentration (sammāsamādhi), which is based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, maturing in relinquishment. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, develops the Noble Eightfold Path and cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path.
Just as, bhikkhus, whatever seeds and plants (bījagāma-bhūtagāma) attain to growth, increase, and abundance, all of them do so relying on the earth, established upon the earth—it is thus that these seeds and plants attain to growth, increase, and abundance—even so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivating the Noble Eightfold Path, attains to growth, increase, and abundance in dhammas."
