[715] "Conduct" (cariyā): there are eight kinds of conduct — conduct in the postures (iriyāpatha), conduct in the sense bases (āyatana), conduct in mindfulness (sati), conduct in concentration (samādhi), conduct in knowledge (ñāṇa), conduct in the path (magga), conduct of attainment (patti), and conduct for the well-being of the world (lokatthacariyā).
"Conduct in the postures": in the four postures. "Conduct in the sense bases": in the six internal and external sense bases. "Conduct in mindfulness": in the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna). "Conduct in concentration": in the four jhānas. "Conduct in knowledge": in the four noble truths. "Conduct in the path": in the four noble paths. "Conduct of attainment": in the four fruits of the ascetic life. "Conduct for the well-being of the world": in the Tathāgatas, Arahants, Fully Self-Awakened Ones; in part [1] in the Paccekabuddhas; in part in the disciples.
Conduct in the postures belongs to those accomplished in resolve; conduct in the sense bases belongs to those who guard the doors of the sense faculties; conduct in mindfulness belongs to those who dwell in heedfulness; conduct in concentration belongs to those devoted to the higher mind; conduct in knowledge belongs to those accomplished in understanding; conduct in the path belongs to those who are practicing rightly; conduct of attainment belongs to those who have attained the fruits; and conduct for the well-being of the world belongs to the Tathāgatas, Arahants, Fully Self-Awakened Ones — in part to the Paccekabuddhas, in part to the disciples. These are the eight kinds of conduct.
