[98] In the previous kamma-existence (kammabhava), delusion is ignorance (avijjā); accumulation is volitional formations; delight is craving (taṇhā); approaching is clinging (upādāna); volition is existence (bhava) — these five dhammas in the previous kamma-existence are conditions for rebirth-linking (paṭisandhi) here. Here, rebirth-linking is consciousness; descent is name-and-form (nāmarūpa); sensitivity is the sense base (āyatana); what is touched is contact (phassa); what is felt is feeling (vedanā) — these five dhammas in the rebirth-existence (upapattibhava) here have their condition in kamma done in the past. Here, owing to the full maturing of the sense bases, delusion is ignorance; accumulation is volitional formations; delight is craving; approaching is clinging; volition is existence — these five dhammas in the kamma-existence here are conditions for rebirth-linking in the future. In the future, rebirth-linking is consciousness; descent is name-and-form; sensitivity is the sense base; what is touched is contact; what is felt is feeling — these five dhammas in the future rebirth-existence have their condition in kamma done here. Thus one knows, sees, understands, and penetrates dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda) with its four groups, its three periods of time, and its three links, by way of these twenty modes.
It is knowledge (ñāṇa) in the sense of that being known; it is wisdom (paññā) in the sense of understanding. Hence it is said: wisdom in the comprehension of conditions is knowledge of the stability of dhammas (dhammaṭṭhitiñāṇa).
