[36]
When the Buddha Padumuttara, the Eldest of the World, the Steadfast One (tādī),
had set out upon the highroad and was walking on tour, at that time,
taking a lotus (paduma) in full bloom, a blue lotus (uppala), and jasmine (mallikā),
and taking the finest of food, I gave them to the Teacher.
The Great Hero partook of the finest food, that excellent meal;
and taking that flower, he displayed it to the people:
"Desired and beloved in the world is this water-born flower supreme;
a deed most difficult to do was done by him, in that he gave me this flower.
He who has offered up the flower and given me the finest of food —
him shall I proclaim: listen to my words.
Eighteen times shall he exercise rulership over the devas;
and blue lotus, lotus, and jasmine besides, above him —
through the ripening of this merit, formed into a canopy in the sky
imbued with divine fragrance, he shall keep them borne aloft at that very time.
Twenty-five times shall he be a wheel-turning monarch (cakkavatti);
and five hundred times, wielding kingship over the earth, he shall dwell upon the land.
A hundred thousand aeons (kappa) hence, one born of the lineage of Okkāka,
Gotama by name, shall be the Teacher in the world.
Rejoicing in his own deed, urged on by the bright root (sukkamūla),
he shall be a kinsman and relative of the Sakyans, a begetter of joy for them.
And afterwards, having gone forth, urged on by the bright root,
having fully understood all the taints (āsava), he shall attain Nibbāna, free of taints.
Gotama, the Kinsman of the World, shall establish him in the foremost place (etadagga) —
one who has attained the analytic insights (paṭisambhidā), whose task is done, who is free of taints.
Intent upon striving, at peace, without acquisitions (nirūpadhi),
he shall be a disciple of the Teacher, Udāyi by name."
Lust (rāga), hatred, and delusion, conceit (māna) and denigration (makkha) have been destroyed;
having fully understood all the taints, I dwell free of taints.
And I gladdened the Fully Awakened One, being ardent (ātāpī) and prudent;
and the Fully Awakened One, well pleased, established me in the foremost place.
The four analytic insights and these eight liberations (vimokkha) too,
and the six superknowledges (abhiññā) have been realized: the Buddha's teaching has been done.
Thus indeed did the Venerable Elder Kāḷudāyi speak these verses.
The Apadāna of the Elder Kāḷudāyi is concluded.
