[460] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), tending to dispersion (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of [wrong] views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), [and,] quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the first jhāna, wishless (appaṇihita), with zeal as the dominant influence (chandādhipateyya): on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are wholesome (kusala).
As the result (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna having been done, having been developed, one, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the first jhāna, wishless, with zeal as the dominant influence: on that occasion there is contact … there is non-distraction … These phenomena are indeterminate.
