[459] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)? On the occasion when one develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), tending to the dismantling [of the round] (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and quick direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipada khippābhiñña), emptiness (suññata), dominated by zeal (chandādhipateyya) … of pleasant practice and sluggish direct knowledge (sukhāpaṭipada dandhābhiñña), emptiness, dominated by zeal … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, emptiness, dominated by zeal … the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … the first jhāna … he enters and dwells in the fifth jhāna, of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, emptiness, dominated by zeal — such is the wholesome (kusala) … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, emptiness, dominated by zeal — such is the result (vipāka) … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, emptiness, dominated by zeal — such is the wholesome … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, signless (animitta), dominated by zeal — such is the result … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, emptiness, dominated by zeal — such is the wholesome … of pleasant practice and quick direct knowledge, desireless (appaṇihita), dominated by zeal — such is the result — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) … These phenomena are indeterminate.
