[496] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops jhāna of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara) that is functional (kiriya) — neither wholesome (kusala) nor unwholesome (akusala), and not the result of kamma (kamma-vipāka), but a pleasant dwelling in the present life (diṭṭhadhamma-sukhavihāra) — and when, with the complete transcending of perceptions of form (rūpa-saññā), with the passing away of perceptions of sensory impingement (paṭigha-saññā), with non-attention to perceptions of diversity (nānatta-saññā), and with the abandoning of pleasure … one enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna accompanied by perception of the sphere of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa) …
