[653] What is that form (rūpa) which is a primary element (mahābhūta) and is gross? The sense base of tangible objects (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) — this is that form which is a primary element and is gross. What is that form which is a primary element and is subtle? The water element (āpodhātu) — this is that form which is a primary element and is subtle. What is that form which is not a primary element and is gross? The eye sense base (cakkhāyatana) … the taste sense base (rasāyatana) — this is that form which is not a primary element and is gross. What is that form which is not a primary element and is subtle? The femininity faculty (itthindriya) … edible food (kabaḷiṅkāro āhāro) — this is that form which is not a primary element and is subtle.
